This interface is used for generating maps of linear correlation between gridded reanalysis and a user-selected point timeseries. The Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient is calculated using the escorc function in NCAR Command Language (NCL). Output from this function provides a measure of linear association between two variables. Novice users should take note that correlation results must be interpreted, and do not imply specific causation or physical relationship between the input variables.

  1. Input 1 — Choose the gridded reanalysis Dataset, Parameter, pressure Level (if applicable), and Month or season to correlate against.
  2. Input 2 — Select the second Dataset. Choose Reanalysis to find the linear correlation between two parameter fields within the dataset selected in Step 1. Choose Climate Index to use an archived climate index (e.g., NAO, PDO, Solar Cycle). Choose User Supplied if you wish to upload your own datafile. In this latter case, uploads must be ASCII text with rows and columns of numeric data. If the file contains a header, then select the number of Header Lines for the program to skip. The leftmost data column must be a sequential list of years. Be sure to choose the correct input Column number. See example file here.
  3. Choose geographical Region.
  4. Click Plot to render the image.
